The son of a sharecropper, 约翰米. 珀金斯 was born into Mississippi poverty. When he was 17 years old, he fled to California after his older brother was murdered by a town marshal.
Although 珀金斯 vowed never to return, after he accepted Christ in 1957, he returned to his boyhood home in 1960 to share the gospel of Christ with those still living in the region. His outspoken support and 领导 role in civil rights demonstrations resulted in repeated harassment, 监禁, 和殴打.
